VOICE is a series of annual art exhibitions organised by SMU Artdicted. It provides a platform for students to express their creativity and showcase their artistic talents, while enabling them to exercise as much freedom of artistic expression as possible. The theme for this year’s VOICE IV exhibition is “Trespassing”, chosen to encourage artists to explore an issue of much social and artistic contention in Singapore.
Trespassing, ironically, would not be possible without the presence of boundaries. These come in the form of societal rules, conventions, cultural values and taboos, and exist to enable society to function. They are inevitable, required to maintain order and normalcy, and are meant to keep people 'safe'. Yet boundaries also stifle and make us feel frustrated and trapped. We struggle against boundaries; we test the limits of what we can or cannot do.
The themes covered by VOICE IV include the championing of civil liberties and messages of hope, the melding of Asian and Western values, and the triumphant overcoming of personal limitations. We hope viewers will be able to judge these works in and of themselves, to ask questions, and reflect on their own experiences of what it means to trespass.
