Mr. Curiosity Acrylic on Canvas “Respect the child. Be not too much his parent. Trespass not on his solitude.” – Emerson 103 Children are meant to be clean slates with a world of possibilities open to them. However, in a paper-chase obsessed society, it is not uncommon to view children as machines or “products” which need to be educated to certain standards. The education system in this country focuses on conformity and obedience. It thrives on predictable academic-based markers which label and categorize children from an early age. Recently, the Singapore Ministry of Education has announced its plans to do away with a points-based achievement system in favour of less discriminatory achievement bands. However, it remains to be seen if this will really change the way we view education. Can we really move towards developing the whole child rather than focusing on a narrow definition of intelligence? |
