Melanie Tan
Outcast Found objects (artist’s own) & picture frames Based on personal experiences of discrimination, Melanie Tan explores her identity both as a Malaysian Chinese and a Malaysian studying in Singapore. This collection of memories reveal what is it like to be seen as an outsider in both contexts. The objects represent times where boundaries were clearly drawn between herself and “them” in a seemingly innocuous way. This work chronicle’s Melanie’s own courage in the face of loneliness and rejection. Both a confession of hurt and a cathartic release, the work hopes to inspire others who face similar circumstances. |
